These Refugee Bans Are Naked Bigotry

Trump has wasted no time in following up on his campaign promise of banning refugees (Syrians) from coming to the states. But wait, as an added bonus, he has also banned all immigrants from Somalia, Yemen, Libya, Sudan, Iraq, and Syria. So, if you are not a citizen and you are trying to get in, tough luck.

Most insane of all has been Trump’s prioritization of Christian refugees over Muslim refugee. This in-your-face religious discrimination will never hold up in any court that has ever seen the Constitution and believes in its principles.

The bigotry and privilege of Trump’s administration shines through in this move. Both Trump and Pence are the ancestors of German and Scottish heritage, and Protestant Christian through and through. The lack of adversity either have faced is laid bare in these actions: neither have struggled for anything past public office and money, the latter of which most need to do, the former nothing more than a glorified job interview. They have never had to worry about finding shelter, food, water, or safety so they have no concept of how it feels to be in need.

So what can we do?

We can do two things today, and a third long-term. First, we need to be contacting our representatives. Follow this link to find and call your representatives. Demand from your representatives a bill guaranteeing admission for immigrants of all types regardless of any consideration. It is a long shot, but we need to be putting that pressure on them; it will not happen if we do not try.

Second, Please donate to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the International Refugee Assistance Project at the Urban Justice Center, the National Immigration Law Center, Yale Law School’s Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization and the firm Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton.

Third, We need to know this is not a sprint. This is the marathon for civil rights. We cannot take time to relish whatever victories we achieve, we need to continuously push and maintain vigilance for anyone facing oppression and discrimination. We need to not only defend them, but go on the offensive: demand proclamations of support from elected officials, demand legislation protecting rights, and always voice support in the face of everyday people’s ignorance.

I will keep all you up to date with commentary and guidance. Also, I will be out there with you in the trenches pushing back on this bullshit.
