Something that would be easier to miss would be the candidates own words about Muslim-Americans. In the town hall-style 2nd debate, both candidates either indicated Muslim-Americans are terrorists waiting to happen, or tools to stop terrorism. period full-stop.
This lack of appreciation of what the Muslim-American experience is and contributions are has not gone unnoticed among Muslim-Americans.
An article in Salon details the feelings of this community succinctly. “I think that there is some level of dismissiveness about Arab-Americans and American Muslims that allows candidates to talk about us, not really to us,” said Omar Baddar, a political analyst and media producer based in Washington.
